If you are looking for a “green” solution to your annual summer lawn mowing chores, then you might want to consider a reel lawn mower.

Reel lawn mowers have come a long way from what you may remember. They are now easy to use, technologically advanced, quiet, efficient… And you have almost none of the maintenance involved with a gas engine mower.

Under review is the Gilmour RM30 20 Inch reel lawn mower. This is a lightweight reel lawn mower that has…

  • An extra wide, 20 inch mowing width
  • A shrub and blade guard for additional safety
  • A 5 blade reel that is self sharpening
  • An adjustable bed knife
  • Easily adjustable cutting heights
  • An included, open cover grass catcher
  • A comfortable, large loop handle with padded grip

We found the Gilmour RM30 online and the shipping was paid for by the seller.

It arrived in four days, and assembly was very basic and easy. Once assembled, this is a tough, well constructed and sturdy unit that is still lightweight enough for easy pushing.

The Gilmour RM30 20-Inch Reel Mower with Grass Catcher – Easy to Use

You simply cannot ask for an easier to use mower. There is no gas, no oil, no batteries, no cords… You just pull this mower out of the garage, adjust the cutting height to the length you want, and start cutting the grass.

If you are tired of the annual summer headaches associated with a gas lawn mower, then you can kiss them goodbye with the Gilmour RM30.

And you can also discount the common complaints you hear about reel lawn mowers as well.

It doesn’t cut very well… you have to go over and over the same spot… You cannot cut the grass when it is wet…

Most people making those claims have not tried any of the newer reel lawn mowers like the Gilmour RM30.

You can get a great, precision cut with this reel lawn mower; and it is ideal for crisp, sharp cuts around the edges of sidewalks and flower beds.

It is very easy to push; in fact, it is a little easier to push around the yard than the gas powered lawn mower I replaced with this reel mower.

And I have used this mower after letting the grass grow a little longer; and after a recent rainstorm… Just to test the Gilmour RM30 out on longer, wet grass.

It went through this longer grass like a knife thru butter, and the included grass catcher caught about 90% of the grass clippings; unexpected, since I had experienced mixed results with an open grass catcher before.

The blades are self sharpening, clean up is nothing more than hosing it off, and I am no longer paying $4 a gallon for gas to load up the mower.

Plus, it is very quiet as the ball bearing assisted 5 blade reel makes almost no noise; and I no longer reek of gas and engine exhaust after cutting the grass.

The Gilmour RM30 20-Inch Reel Mower with Grass Catcher – Great Results With A Caveat

The Gilmour RM30 reel lawn mower has given me great results about 97% of the time.

Its perfect record was spoiled when I happened upon a thicker stick that caused the 5 blade reel to catch. But even a gas mower has problems with these larger sticks, and a quick inspection of both front and back lawn before mowing solves this problem; and should be done before mowing anyways.

Also, there area only three grass cutting height adjustments; I would like to have a lower adjustment than the current lowest one available as I like to keep my lawn short.

But other than that, this reel lawn mower does exactly what it is supposed to; it cuts grass quickly, efficiently, and easily.

If you are looking for a replacement for your high maintenance gas lawn mower, then the Gilmour RM30 20 Inch Reel Lawn Mower is an excellent choice. And at $120, it is an exceptional value as well.
